What Makes For Good Mosquito Control?

Nothing ruins a beautiful summer evening quite like bloodthirsty mosquitoes. Unfortunately, there is no quick and easy solution to get rid of mosquitoes. Many products promise results that are usually too good to be true. Insecticides may be useful in controlling a mosquito problem but require handling by professionals who are well-trained and versed in safety precautions. Prevention and habitat limitation can be easily achieved with a few steps.
Mosquitoes require water to breed, and not a lot of it. Adult mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water or areas water is likely to collect. The key to preventing an infestation is eliminate breeding grounds.
  • Empty all standing water and containers that may collect water, like old tires, pots, buckets, birdbaths, etc.
  • Drill holes into the bottom of any garbage containers to promote water drainage
  • Clean any clogged gutters and draining roof flats, as these are the most overlooked sites for mosquito breeding
  • Keep your swimming pool or hot tub in working order and ensure it is properly chlorinated
  • Empty plastic pools that are not regularly used
  • Fill in tree rot holes that hold water
  • Ornamental ponds should be kept with moving water and stocked with mosquito-eating fish
  • Get rid of any weeds or tall grass that mosquitoes can rest on
Even after completing these steps, mosquitoes can sometimes remain. Mosquitoes are usually a harmless—albeit bothersome—part of summer, but they can also carry infectious diseases. Take these steps to limit your exposure to mosquitoes.
  • Stay indoors during dusk and evening hours
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants whenever possible to provide protection
  • Check for any gaps or holes in your window and door screens
  • When purchasing topical cream to repel mosquitoes, make sure the product contains diethyl toluamide (DEET)
  • Candles containing citronella oil have mosquito repelling properties and work better when there are multiple candles placed in close proximity to you
Dealing with mosquito nuisance is an inevitable part of summer. Despite dozens of popular control methods advertised on TV or by your friends, these solutions can be harmful and are often not worth your time or money. The keys to reducing nuisance from mosquitoes are prevention and limiting exposure.
